Then, when `ball lightning' ... whatever it is ... became too `ODD' of an explanation for something SO FREQUENT --- the `unknown' simply became the `BOL' (ball of light) - in the sky; something to be largely... again.... dismissed (Also referred to as LITS (lights in the sky). It also allowed for more `mystery' to be instilled into the phenomena in a sense -- as the rare conditions for `ball lightning' simply didn't fit the growing body of `moving ground level Orbs'.
Yes, the `Orbs' of `ghost photography' - what some wished was nothing more than dust in a light field - was suddenly being `transfered' into the sky as some sort of `anomalous being' with the ability to `sense human consciousness'...... One heck of an evolution IMO...... don't you think?

Pulled to stop sign, saw this object hovering. Tried to memorize it's shape then was told to forget what I saw and it slowly faded invisable like a cloaking.
